DIY sector growth hinges on ‘don’t move, improve’ attitude

There was some good news for the DIY sector as a recent report suggested their will be a growth in the sector in the next 12 months, after a few static years. As more people decide to tackle smaller jobs themselves, they are sourcing everything they need – from hinges and ironmongery to tools and interior design – for themselves.

The initial decline in the DIY sector was due to the lack of sales of ‘big ticket’ items such as bathroom and kitchen installations, but people still favoured the GSI approach (Get Someone In) to any improvements or repairs needed around the house. But the latest research, from AMA Research Ltd, suggests that has all changed recently. Homeowners have decided that, with a static housing market and rising living costs, now is the time to tackle lighter jobs themselves. Our experience here at Ironmongery Online bears this out – we are selling more of the very basic DIY items such as hinges, door hardware, and general ironmongery to the general public. Through online stores like ours, DIYers can access a wide variety of high quality hardware from the comfort of their home, and order what they need for when they need it.

The report states “more consumers are now undertaking lighter DIY tasks themselves in order to save money. The DIY multiples have responded with project guides and DIY classes. The trend towards ‘grow your own’ and ‘improve, don’t move’ has supported sales in some sectors of the garden and leisure market, along with the home furnishings and decorating sectors.”

Many websites, including our own, are offering very clear product information on hinges, hardware, ironmongery and other DIY basics so that the general public can make an informed decision on the products they need, and there is no shortage of How To guides, DIY books and TV programmes. The growth in the Buy-to-Let market has also seen many landlords managing and maintaining their property portfolio – from decorating to running repairs, complete refurbishments and dealing with the ‘wear and tear’ between lets. This allows them to maximise their return from the rental properties.

Luckily, Ironmongery Online is a DIY-ers dream – will all the basic hinges, hardware and ironmongery in one great value place.
